We are almost to the Arctic Circle. Not quite, but close enough we can “taste it.” The Arctic Circle and its companion the Antarctic Circle are the dotted lines on the map that mark the furthest from the pole you can get and still experience the phenomenon called “the midnight sun.”

The Wild Life
The best time to observe the “Wild Life” along the Alaska Highway is early morning. We made the effort this morning and were rolling by 7:30. During the day we crossed the summit of the Canadian Rockies at 4,250 feet. We pulled some nine percent grades, and although the highway was narrow and without shoulders we were able to drive on smooth paved roads with only an occasional rough spot, and these were always well marked. We have been cruising at about 50 mph in these mountains. Perhaps just a tad slower on the nine percent grades. Continue reading The Wild Life
The Great White North
We are now north of Dawson Creek and officially on the Alaska Highway. We have come about a thousand miles into Canada and tonight we are staying in Pink Mountain, British Columbia. Pink Mountain is a small outpost in a sea of trees. We are thinking it is probably named for its most famous home town band, Pink Flyod. They were a popular band in the early 40’s. Consisted of a rhythm guitar a kazoo and a wash tub bass. We saw a movie at Dawson Creek about building this road. Continue reading The Great White North
Into Canada:
We have lots of relatives in Colville and Kettle Falls Washington. We stopped at Buena Vista where two of my aunts, Lindell and Shandon, live. I brought along my guitar and played music for over an hour. I had a wonderful time playing and I think everyone there enjoyed themselves. We then moved on to a campground in Kettle Falls and cousins Benny and Monty and his wife Marilyn dropped by for a visit. We met up with Judy’s sister, Sonja and Jack at the campground and we spent the evening planning our trip to Alaska. Continue reading Into Canada:
At the Lake:
We are spending three days at the Newman Lake, Washington, home of my sister, Holly. This is on the outskirts of Spokane and almost in Idaho. We are visiting with cousins Norm and Roger and Nephew Carl and his wife Melissa and Devin, Skyler and new grand niece Melody. Wednesday we will go to Colville and Kettle Falls to visit with a bunch more cousins and aunts. As much fun as it is to travel around the country and visit new places, it is also wonderful to visit family and friends. Continue reading At the Lake:
